This policy has been written from a dual perspective, as follows:
- The recognition that alcohol and drug problems can be an illness and therefore should be treated as such, and
- The recognition of the impact alcohol and drug abuse can have on the ability to work safely and correctly.
With this in mind, the purpose of this policy is:
- To alert all employees to the risks associated with the misuse of alcohol and drugs, to promote good practice and change behaviour and attitudes concerning such use.
- To highlight the dangers of alcohol, drug and substance abuse in the workplace.
- To promote a healthy and safe environment and thereby protect the welfare of both employees and the general public who may be affected by the operation of the Company.
- To help the identification of employees with alcohol and/or drug related problems and to encourage and assist employees who suspect or know that they have an alcohol and/or drug problem to seek help.
- To provide appropriate assistance to employees who have significant and ongoing problems with alcohol, drugs and/or substance abuse and thereby support them to full health and full working capacity.
- To guide employees on the policy and the procedures associated with the misuse of alcohol, drugs and other substances.
- To make it clear that the Company regards the abuse of alcohol, drugs, and/or substances as incompatible with efficient and safe employment performance and as such it will result in disciplinary proceedings.
