Recognising the Signs/Symptoms

We endeavour to recognise the early signs of substance abuse and a number of indicators should, therefore, be monitored.  Should you begin to display one or more of these indicators a director may invite you to discuss the issue.

The following characteristics, especially when arising in combinations, may indicate the presence of an alcohol or drug-related problem. There may be physical signs, such as smelling of alcohol, a loss of appetite, unkempt appearance, bloodshot eyes or shaking. Or:

  • Absenteeism – unauthorised leave, lateness, excessive levels of sickness absence, absence patterns such as frequent absences on Mondays/Fridays.
  • Work performance – decrease in quality or quantity of work, increase in number of errors, difficulty in concentration, missed deadlines.
  • High accident level – whether at work or elsewhere (i.e., driving, or at home).
  • Other factors – irritability, depression, problems with relationships with other employees.

It is very important not to automatically assume that an employee displaying one or more of the above symptoms is misusing alcohol, drugs or substances as these could all be attributed to a number of different factors. Any concerns must be discussed with HR before any action is taken in relation to the concerns.
