Travel by Road – Mileage
Mileage will be reimbursed at rates specified by HMRC, which are designed to allow you to recover some of the car running costs, as well as petrol. You should always claim for the exact mileage incurred and there should be no rounding to, for example, the nearest five or ten miles.
You may claim for business travel completed in your own car, providing you have the relevant insurance on your personal policy, as outlined earlier in this section.
If you are based at home, and this has been approved by HMRC (something that is done on a case-by-case basis), then you may claim mileage from home to another place of work. Please ensure that your own home contents policy covers all possessions carried in your vehicle, as we will not pay claims that are covered under personal insurance policies. (However, if you suffer losses whilst on business, we may refund any insurance excess relating to the claim and this cost will be borne by your department).
