Managing and being part of a flexible/ remote team
Working as a flexible or remote team takes different skills to working as part of a set team, 9 to 5, in a permanent location. Working styles will change and as the director(s), management styles will also change. However, the core of how we manage our teams and relate to each other will not change. Flexible team management is still focused on our values coming alive.
A successful flexible team needs:
- Open communication
- Clear expectations and defined goals to work towards
- Knowing when team members are available
- Regular feedback
- Opportunities to grow and develop
With us not all being in the same place at the same time, it is important teams share their availability and working patterns so we can still communicate and work effectively together. Wherever you are working, the expectations around lateness and being available at agreed times are still the same. Please let your teammates and a director know (when needed) if you are running late or need to drop offline for a while (which is the digital equivalent of needing to “pop out for 5”). To help us plan workload and check in, we will review team availability from time to time. Where possible we will be flexible with each other; however, if lateness or being “offline” becomes a regular issue, we will need to talk.
As a company, we will work with everyone to help them adapt to our flexible working approach through coaching, 121s and training. If you have any queries over this, please speak with a director.
